Originally formed in Mafikeng, South Africa when band-leader, Patrick Steer was on a contract as a consultant to the International School of South Africa in 1994 to assist the School in establishing a monetary foundation for its financial future. The first ‘Free Beer’ played in the Mafikeng Club which still bore battle scars from the famous Siege in 1899. (The band was made up from teaching staff at the School plus Patrick & Betty-May, Patrick’s wife).
On their return to Adelaide Patrick and Betty-May reformed “FREE BEER” (The Band)! as a Trad Jazz/Dixieland Group. (Over the next 2-3 years the Band changed its musical direction leaning more towards Soul, Swing, Jazz, Pop, Soft Rock and Latin but still included some Trad Jazz).
However, not having played together for some time, eight of the original “FREE BEER” (The Band)! members attended Patrick’s 50th birthday as guests and brought their instruments with them. They got together and played about 10 numbers to the 80 people attending and to quote some of the guests who used to follow the Band at the Kent Town Hotel years ago,“That sounded bloody great. Why don’t you reform the Band”?
The Band members agreed and their first gig was in the best ‘live music venue’ in Adelaide/Aust, ‘The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel’ and packed the place in March 2014 with a show called ‘Beyond The Fringe’.
After moving to SE Qld just over 5 years ago, Patrick reformed the Band (again) on the Gold Coast backing ‘Joe Ace & Susie Jay’ in their “LEGENDS CONCERT SHOWS” throughout SE Qld and Nth NSW providing great dance music as well.
COVID-19 put a stop to all that in Feb 2020, so Patrick and Allison moved back to SA in September reforming “FREE BEER” (The Band)! aka ‘Opus 9‘ once again and with thanks to Melissa Tonkin, the Band will be presenting another ‘Beyond The Fringe’ at The Gov featuring special guest Geoffrey Whitman (original Trumpet and Vocal) on Sunday 28th of March 2021 from 1.00 pm till 4.00pm.
